Process
I started this project with designing directly in Figma Sites. I skipped wire-framing entirely (I know) but I wanted to try free-styling the design and letting ideas emerge naturally. I also don’t get the chance to do that often, so it was an opportunity to build things live. It turned out this might have been the best approach, by experimenting with the capabilities and limitations of Figma Sites, I was able to quickly see what was possible and what wasn’t.
To determine the scope, I knew I’d need an index page, a detail page, and an embedable feedback form. Nothing fancy.
Other Thoughts
Figma Sites is pretty cool for what it is, and will be a great tool for many people. I didn’t run into too many issues with it that didn’t stem from my own mishandling of layout elements (although there are some odd text transformations I still couldn’t put my finger on). One takeaway is that Auto layout on every item is critical for things to be work.
I built this while the feature was still in beta, and before Figma Make or Sites CMS was available, so I’m sure improvements to the tool are coming soon.
For me, using Figma Sites will depend on the use case. I think for some things, like this portfolio, it will be great. For other things, it might be just as fast to go ahead and code a website myself. Time will tell.
Learning Goal
Figma Sites. Also - Hosting. Feedback form. Notion.
Self Score
4/5
I had fun building this for myself. I don’t think it will win any design awards, but that wasn’t really the point. I wanted to learn what Figma Sites could do intuitively, and I think I got a pretty good sample of that. I also wanted to build something that was flexible enough to showcase other work that I will do over the next 25 projects, and I think this will be a good starting point.

To determine the scope, I knew I’d need an index page, a detail page, and a way for visitors to submit feedback. Nothing fancy. I used Notion to keep track of progress and organize my thoughts. Publishing was extremely easy and a highlight of the experience.

I didn’t run into too many issues with it that didn’t stem from my own mishandling of layout elements (although there are some odd text transformations I still couldn’t put my finger on). There’s some standout niceties, like being able to easily add interactions and effects. A big takeaway is that Auto layout on every item is critical for things to work as you’d expect from a responsive website.
For me, using Figma Sites will depend on the use case. I think for some things, like this portfolio, it will be great. For other things, it might be just as fast to go ahead and code a website myself. Time will tell.
Important note: I built this while the feature was still in beta, and before Figma Make or Sites CMS was available, so I’m sure improvements to the tool are coming soon.
